While high winds kept us from opening on Wednesday night, and we only caught 3 Saw-whets last night, the season is still off to a decent start. We have banded 39 and recaptured 5 previously banded Saw-whets. Oh yeah, it's cold!! It got down to 7 degrees last night and we're at 22 right now. At least that means the trails are frozen enough that we don't have to snowshoe and ski. We always enjoy it when Michigan Audubon executive director Jonathon Lutz is able to pay us a visit, and last night he was finally here when we caught some owls. That's Jonathon in the above photo holding a couple of Saw-whets.

Thank you, Chris and Nova, for sharing your research with me! Your efforts to study the owls of Whitefish Point are critical to understanding the species, but also for learning more about our global environment. I am deeply appreciative of being included in your night's work!
