Spring owl banding has officially begun! It is always a thrill to start another season at the Point, guessing what owls this spring migration will bring to us. The fact that there is several feet of snow in the net lanes hasn't dampened our spirits .....oh wait, yes it has a bit. The Saw-whets are moving though so we don't mind. In the first two nights, we have banded 22 Saw-whets and recaptured 4 Saw-whets that were previously banded. One of the recaptures was a bird that Nova banded as a juvenile in August of 2007- very cool (photo above). We have not seen any other owl species yet, but are feeling very enthusiastic thus far!

Great job, guys! Let's hope these little Saw-whets are a sign of good things to come.
