Our New Mascot

The first bird captured during 2010 fall owl banding wasn't an owl at all, but this American Woodcock. He's our new mascot. We've found Snipe, Whip-poor-will, and Ruffed Grouse in the nets before, but never this comical "shore"bird. It's ironic that the gift shop is selling WPBO shirts with a Woodcock (aka Timberdoodle, Night Partridge, Bogsucker, Brush Snipe, and Hokumpoke) print this year.

Owl migration is off to a slow start with 4 Saw-whet Owls captured over the last three nights. One of them was already wearing a band. The fall season usually gets 1 to 5 Saw-whet Owl recaptures and we're always eager to find out where they were originally banded and how long ago. Recaptures provide some of the most interesting and useful information o
btained during bird banding projects. The farthest distance that WPBO has exchanged a banded Saw-whet was with a site over 1000 miles away in Saskatchewan.

It was my bird hahahaha!!! I check this blog everyday to see if you catch anymore of my owls. Fantastic site Chris and Nova! I just love seeing your captures and pics of interesting birds caught. I've caught 3 NSWO's and 12 LEOW's so far. It's been slow b/c of the constant rain. Here's my blog if your interested, best of owling this fall!!!

Had a great time trying to see owls. Unfortunately we missed the one you caught. It was a little difficult switching back and forth between ghost hunting and owl watching, but it was fun. Hopefully someday we will make it back up there.
