April's Northern Lights
Tonight's Moonrise over Lake Superior

Molting juvenile Saw-whet

Rain and wind kept us from opening on Tuesday, but things picked up again last night. We banded 20 juvenile & 1 adult Saw-whet Owls, and cuaght a Silver-haired Bat before the wind picked up again at 3:30. We are hearing nocturnal migrants and have been seeing lots of things, which we believe to mainly be bats, in the lighthouse beam in recent nights. Tonight a Red Bat was really buzzing us in the net lanes, absolutely beautiful. The weather has been as hot & humid as we have ever experienced here, but nighttime temperatures are supposed to drop to around 40 on Friday night. We can't wait! Unfortunately high winds are also predicted with this front. There were also reports of a solar flare that could produce some northern lights. While we did not get any of the aurora borealis the crescent moon rose a brilliant orange over the lake tonight.
