Northern Flying Squirrel
adult Northern Saw-whet Owlmolting in its tail
Despite more high winds and rain limiting our efforts recently, the nights have been interesting at the Point. In addition to Saw-whets we have found a Northern Flying Squirrel, a Red Bat, and a Silver-haired Bat in the nets. The mammals are truly amazing to see up close, but they do damage to the nets and we'd be much happier with an opportunity to see the squirrels at the feeders. During the summer we not only have the opportunity to see juvenile Saw-whets molting into their adult plumage, but also to see adults in active molt. The above Saw-whet had dropped all of its tail feathers and the new feathers were about a quarter of the way grown back in.
