Great Horned Owl

The owls have continued to be slow but steady. We were able to open on 6 of the last 8 nights and banded 37 Saw-whets, 1 Boreal, and 3 Long-eareds. The fact that weather conditions on several of these nights were very favorable leads us to believe that the owl migration is likely to remain slow for the rest of the spring. The Great Horned that has spent weeks hunting from the lighthouse has not been seen the last few nights and may have finally moved on. However, as was proven yesterday you never know what might show up. A very nice couple told us about a Snowy Owl sitting at the entrance of North Shore Rd. We've been fortunate enough to see many memorable sights here, none more so than a Snowy perched among the pines. The stormy weather the previous night had produced a nice fallout of songbirds, and apparently a somewhat wet and disheveled Snowy Owl. That night a group of Brits had the Snowy fly over them on the hawk platform and head out over the lake during the evening flight, we're jealous.
