On Halloween we broke an eight day stretch with no owls. Being the last night of the season, we were more than happy to see the wind die down and lucky enough to catch 10 more Saw-whets and 1 Long-eared Owl. Banding totals for the season come to 7 Barred Owls, 9 Long-eared Owls, and 389 Northern Saw-whet Owls. The abundance of Saw-whets, and the rate at which they were captured, was the highest ever recorded in 18 years of fall banding at WPBO. This is in stark contrast to the slowest season ever in 2008 when a mere 46 were banded, and supports the notion that there is still more to learn about owl migration at Whitefish Point. We are very thankful to have been part of this landmark season and sincerely hope that fall owl banding at WPBO continues for years to come.

Congratulations on another successful season at the Point. It was great having you guys back this year and I'm sure the owls liked it too! So many great memories over so many years...
My husband and I visited 3 times this fall and really enjoyed it. Only the long-eared didn't show for us. Maybe next year! You guys are great, enjoy your time in the sun!
