molting juvenile Saw-whetAfter experiencing a particularly early owl migration this spring, we are now seeing an early movement of juvenile Saw-whets this summer. We banded 4 adult and 50 juvenile Saw-whets last night. In just its 5th season the summer research is still relatively new, but this is both the highest nightly total and the most juveniles banded in a night. We will not be surprised if this turns out to be the season's peak night. That being said, we are still approaching what was the most productive period during the first 3 full summer seasons and last night certainly got us into full swing. In addition to experiencing early movements we are also seeing birds at advanced stages of their post-juvenile molt compared to previous seasons. The lower photo shows a juvenile molting out of its juvenal plumage. You can see the white adult feathers along the earflaps and in the facial disk. The weather conditions look good for tonight, hopefully it will be another productive one.
