Great Gray Owls

Great Gray Owl wing

April has gotten off to a decent start, but given the favorable weather conditions we are a bit surprised that there hasn't been more activity. April 1-4 results; 38 Northern Saw-whets, 4 Boreals, 13 Long-eareds, and 1 Barred. As we mentioned in our last post, 2 Great Gray were caught on the 31st, one of which was previously banded. The banded owl was originally banded as an adult in Alcona, Ontario on January 7, 2005. This means it was born no later than 2003, and will therefore turn at least 7 years old sometime within the next few months. According to the Banding Lab's data this is the third oldest record for a wild Great Gray Owl. This is the left bird in the top photo and it weighed about 20% more than the other Great Gray. In the bottom photo you can see how broad and square tipped a Great Gray's wings are. You can also see the old faded feathers which were not replaced during the most recent molt.
