1st Great Gray Owl on Chris's Birthday!

Great Gray & Boreal Owls
Great Gray release

We banded the 1st Great Gray Owl of the season last night. One was also heard calling a few nights ago, but who knows if this is the same one. While Great Grays have been seen every spring that we've been here, spring 2006 was the last time one has been banded. We also heard the 1st Great Horned Owl of the season two nights ago. Believe it or not, of the 9 species of owl that occur here Great Horned may be the hardest to find. The banding has picked up the last 3 nights with 46 Saw-whets, 11 Boreals, and the Great Gray being banded. We also recaptured a Saw-whet that was banded here last spring. The Boreal we banded on March 22 was also recaptured. It was still and good shape and had even gained 9 grams. On a personal note, my birthday happens during the spring season, and I have been treated to some great birthday nights at Whitefish Point. On my birthday in 1999 I caught my first Great Gray at the Point. As last night's Great Gray, along with a couple Boreals and Saw-whets, was caught after midnight I'm having another special birthday at the Point. Plus, Nova and I didn't even have to argue over who got to band it. We'll see what else happens before midnight tonight, but I'm already happy.

Happy Belated Birthday from Pam and Sarah Toner! We have had a great year of bird watching down here in the land of the trolls underneath the bridge, and we're looking forward to coming up for a visit tomorrow to see what you're banding! We wanted to come to the spring fling, but Pam is off from teaching this week, so now is our only chance for a trip north.

Looking forward to seeing you again!

Pam and Sarah (and Sarah's Dad and Grandfather, too).
