Our spirits got a bit of a boost last night. After banding only 4 juvenile Saw-whets since we began on July 1st, and none since the 22nd, we banded 6 last night. These birds were all in the very early stage of their molt into adult plumage, providing a little more hope that there may be more to come. While we've given up hopes of matching last year's success, hopefully this is a sign that we are finally about to see a little bit of a juvenile movement.
